Nicholas D. Velez
ASSOCIATE
"I believe the best defense is built on preparation, candor, and a relentless focus on the facts."
Overview
Nicholas D. Velez is a litigator whose practice encompasses white collar defense, government investigations, internal investigations, complex commercial matters, and appeals. His keen focus on uncovering facts and arguments that shape case strategy is a powerful asset for companies and individuals facing government scrutiny, as well as for clients competing across a range of industries.
Nick began his career as a litigation associate at a national law firm, where he drafted pleadings, dispositive motions, appellate briefs, and mediation statements. He also worked in the firm’s White Collar Defense practice, representing clients in investigations and enforcement matters involving the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ), the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority (FINRA), and state attorneys general. Nick’s work spanned the entire life cycle of an investigation, from conducting factual investigations and managing discovery and document productions to analyzing complex factual records, preparing witness interview memoranda, and helping develop case strategy. Nick also served as trial counsel in two pro bono matters, securing a final restraining order for a domestic violence survivor and successfully defending a tenant in an eviction proceeding.
Nick served as a judicial law clerk to the Hon. Georgette Castner of the U.S. District Court for the District of New Jersey. His time in chambers gave him an inside view of federal motion practice and judicial decision-making that informs how he frames arguments for the court.
Nick graduated magna cum laude from Seton Hall University School of Law, where he was elected to the Order of the Coif and served as Articles Editor of the Seton Hall Law Review. Nick served in the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve for six years, achieving the rank of Sergeant.
